Fountain of Youth
Posted in Rants on February 7th, 2010I have been finding it more and more time consuming to update my blog. I love all the comments from the new visitors I’m getting all of the sudden, it makes me feel so popular, but then it takes me more and more time commenting back, that by the time I get done, I don’t have time to actually post!
So it makes me wonder where I’ll be this time next year! Out of curiosity, how much time do you spend commenting/posting each week?
With all the work I have to do these days, it makes me reflect back on my childhood more and more. I was a stupid kid. Well, not stupid, naive. Up till I moved to Tennessee in 7th grade, I really had no concept of the world. Which is stupid, since we took a road trip every summer across half the country to go visit my mom’s side of the family. But that didn’t really register in my young mind. My whole world consisted of my neighborhood and the few roads that drove to school, to the store, and to my friends’ houses. And that was the world. No one else existed. Which is funny because we had a map of the world hanging in the hallway and I would stare at it every day looking for funny names of cities. It just amazes me that the amount of people in the world didn’t sink in until middle school. We’ve started talking about mental development in my education class, so I’m starting to see that it’s normal and most kids think this way, but its still embarrassing to think that I was supposed to be the smart one!!
All I would do was go to school, come home, and ride over to my neighbor’s house on my bike to play with her nintendo. I was so jealous, I wanted one of my own! Mario was the shizz, and we would play for hours, all the while listening to local radio station, streaming Brittney Spears and N*Sync to our young ears, until I had to go home for dinner. I would then go upstairs, do my homework, then play with my beads or yarn while watching Disney channel, then fall asleep and start the whole thing over again.
It amazes me the luxuries that kids have these days. And I’m not even old! I’m 19!! But looking at the cool games you can play with an xbox 360, and the interactiveness of the wii, and how you can play your playstation 3 with your psp, if I understood that correctly, I’m freakin jealous!!! I got ripped off in my childhood!
And then there are the clothes girls are wearing these days. I mean, dude, they’re mini adults! What happened to being a kid? Why does an 8 year old girl NEED high heels and tube tops? I wore leggings and T shirts till 6th grade. I didn’t even have a purse till high school. Now looking in the window of Limited Too while in the mall, it amazes me how much things have changed so quickly. I hear girls asking other girls if they look fat, and they’re 8 and look anorexic! What type of impact does that have on their development into adulthood? And the music they listen to. Granted, the pop of my day wasn’t exactly clean, but neither was it so explicit. When little girls know every word of Lady Gaga’s Love Game song and have no clue what they’re singing about, it kind of worries me. But that’s just me, wishing kids could stay young forever.
What differences, if any, have you noticed from your childhood and kids today? What did you do as a kid for fun?

I’d pick a bike ride over a ps3 ANYDAY. I don’t feel ripped off, I feel that the kids these days are ripped off from enjoying nature :P
and I’m really bad with commenting back haha… I try! It’s not really an obligation but it keeps the visitors returning :P

Yeah, updating regularly can be time consuming, especially if you have a lot to do! XD
And I’m jealous of all the luxuries kids these days have, too. I mean, sure, I grew up with materialistic things (as an only child, I was spoiled), but I was still not that lucky compared to some of the kids today . . .
I read book as a kid for fun and played Barbie dolls LOL. XD That’s what I did before video game and computer came into my life.

I spend about an hour in posting my blog, reading the blogs of those who commented, and commenting back. The reason for this is because before I hit WordPress and type all the way, I already have a topic beforehand (which surprises me because those topics would just pop up in my mind all of a sudden). Sometimes, I even type an entry beforehand. Total focus about blogging is fine, yeah. But if you’re busy, it’s okay if you don’t blog that much, like having a post every single day.
About the kids these days, you’re right, they’re mini-adults. In our country (Philippines), it is said that the people in our country is conservative, but hey, when I was like, in 5th grade, in our school, I already see kids younger that me wearing mini skirts and short shorts, tank tops, spaghetti-strapped hanging blouses, and so on. I just don’t understand why they wear such clothes. Now, it’s 2010 and we still see the same thing. They even get younger and younger — some parents even tolerate their child/children when their child/children wear such type of clothes simply because they [the parents] are the ones who buy clothes for their children. Technology sure created new heights, but it’s sad that it has negative effects on children, — what they wear, what they play, and many others.

Ah, popularity has it’s down side. xD
I usually post once a week, sometimes more during school holidays.
Nowadays, I write half my blog, and “save as draft” and get back to it later sometimes.
Heh, don’t worry, we were ALL naive as children. It’s only natural. I suppose we could all be naive in specific areas, and well developed or “smart” in others. If that makes any sense… xD
I still remember playing with a black and white gameboy. Well, it was my brother’s but he gave it to me after the gameboy colour advanced came out
I loved playing with beads as well when I was a kid.
I know what you mean by kids being “mini adults”. But when again when I was a kid I wanted to be grown up. Though I’m not so sure as to whether I was a slut or not >_>
Hmm, well, the change I’ve noticed is pretty much the same as yours. I’ve also heard about children’s push up bra’s (that made me feel disgusted. I myself don’t even wear them!!!) I mean c’mon, what the heck is there to push up when you’re friggen 6!
As a kid, I played with Pokemon cards, tarzo’s, scooby-doos (there these plastic things that you made keyrings out of), and skipping and hopscotch.

I use to watch tv all the time when I was a child and play with friends. I had no idea about dressing fashionably til I was about 15. kids these days r like into fashion when they’re like 10 and wearing loads of makeup. I didn’t wear a y till I was 17 and I didn’t really know how till then. kids are growing up too fast these days.

It depends really, on how often I blog per week. I tend to draft up a load of posts at the weekend though when I get inspiration so during the week when I’m tired I don’t have to do too much. It takes half an hour at most to then reply to the comments.
My childhood was the same, though I am a few years older than you. My world was the area I grew up in, and I played outside with the neighbours practically everyday. Then we got Sky and sat in front of the TV a bit more.

I often think about how different growing up in the 90s was to how it must be for kids to grow up today. So much has changed. I was born in 1983 and even remember part of the 80s. I’ve noticed lots of differences. The biggest one is technology. When I was really young I didn’t even own a CD player. DVD players didn’t exist. Only adults had cell phones but not many. People had beepers though. I didn’t know what internet was until I was 13. When we got internet in my home we had a 56k modem and that was considered FAST.
Fashion wise the big difference is that kids dressed as kids when I grew up. We weren’t fashionable. We were comfortable.
I guess nowadays kids don’t need to be comfortable since they spend most of their time indoors in front of computers and video games anyway.

I hardly ever comment on things these days because I have so much to do! Then again, I hardly blog too. I’m trying to remedy *both*.

I try to blog about once a week. Anything more is always a bonus for me! I comment back on new blogs right after I post mine, that way I don’t forget to comment on everyone.
Don’t feel ripped off! Look back and think about all the FUN we had as kids…. N*Sync, Britney, Mario.. that’s my version of the best childhood ever. Now kids spend too much time caring about their video games. When we played games, it wasn’t a big deal to just shut it off… now try that with a 10 year old and you’re likely to get a black eye!

hey i finally got my store back up. all of the snow we’ve been hit with has given me alot of time lol. i agree. 7 year old should not be walking around with “juicy” on their butts

I SUPER LOVE YOUR POST NOW DEAR! I’ve been meaning to discuss this and it’s been in my pensieve of thoughts for a LOONGG TIME. Like how different kids are today really compared to us. I mean really, you’re right with the clothes and songs, what happened to “being a kid”? Is there even such a thing anymore? This is why when I have kids, I want them to grow up in the countryside or something and let them play OUTDOORS and make friends and LIVE. Not just holed up to a video console or what but of course they will still have these!
As a kid, life was really such bliss because once i got home from school, I’ll do my homework and then watch TV, play with my brother, make believe with the toys we have and create a world. I’d be talking on the REAL PHONE with my friends and I was just so happy. We also traveled a lot and went to different countries but most especially to Hong Kong, I DO LOVE THAT CITY! Man… I wish things were like that still too..
I’ve been getting new commenters too! It’s so awesome really!
