Talkin Turkey

Posted in Life on November 25th, 2009

It’s finally getting to be holiday time, I’ve been waiting too long. But unlike usual, my boy’s taking me home! :yay: Talk about nerve wrecking! I’ve met his family before, but not like this. I’m spending the night, and I’m going to be meeting some extended family as well. How scary is it to be the only outsider? I’m going to be surrounded! :wah:

Usually every year during Thanksgiving it was just my immediate family. When we were little we’d make the drive out to my dad’s mom’s house, and see his whole side of the family, but then we moved to Tennessee, which is a little too far away. And, my family doesn’t even like turkey, so we don’t have the typical feast. Once we did cornish hens, which were odd, but now we stick to a ham. So Thanksgiving is nice, but not as intimate as it used to be. It’s a little exciting to be spending the day with someone’s family, but I’m going to have to be on my guard, since they’re all going to be judging me. I hear that one uncle always gets wasted, though, so I don’t think they’re going to be too harsh on me, lol.

Hopefully I win them over with my amazing charm and dazzling good looks.

It does make me a little concerned, though, because I know his family has hit a tough spot money wise. The economic depression is hurting them more so than others, and Eamon was on his own for  a little while. I saw him looking online at cheap health insurance, and I don’t know if it was supposed to be for him, for his mom, since she lost her health insurance, or for our future, or what, but it made me a little more observant of his actions. Since he wasn’t even looking at a mainstream company, I’m not sure how bad they’re really doing. I kinda don’t want to eat their turkey I’m so concerned, but I suppose one meal isn’t going to break the bank!

And anyways, I’m probably slightly overreacting. I do tend to do that. In 2 years Eamon will have a degree and hopefully a sound job, and our ebay sales are just amazing, so we should be good. I just need to relax and try to enjoy this trip. At least be rested up for Friday, the dreaded Black Friday, working at the mall. I’ve stocked up on plastic gloves to wear that day so my hands don’t become raw with all the irritation from the cleaning water. So… wish me luck!!

Do you have any favorite holiday traditions? If you’re living in America, what do you do for Thanksgiving?

I always have Thanksgiving with my maternal grandmother. My family comes, my uncle’s family comes, and this year, we have more people coming than usual (a friend’s family, who has five kids!)

And since you’re going to be in Nashvegas, you totally need to hit me up and see me before you head back! You and Eamon both! <3

Actually, this year I went to my boyfriend’s parents house too! I love them– absolutely adore them– but I was still out of comfort zone. They were incredibly accommodating and sweet, like always, but it was still different to be away from home.

I come from a small, but loud family. He comes from a small, but quiet family. So…it’s all different, but it’s okay. :) And there were a LOT of dogs there. We have a dog (a little Westie), but there were 7 dogs there… four were theirs, one was ours, and 2 belonged to a family friend. I was incredibly overwhelmed by it and tried to be polite, but had to excuse myself. Other than that…it was a lot of fun.

Hopefully you survived Black Friday and your Thanksgiving. :)

I’ve never experienced spending a holiday with the family of my boyfriend before and yes, you have to be on your guard at all times coz they’d be observing your every action and all. I’m sure you’ll be able to win their heart, though! :) Just be yourself, that’s the most important thing.

*pokes* You’re question needs to be amended to “If you’re American and live in America or overseas”! XD Just thought I’d mention that since there are a lot of Americans overseas who will do Thanksgiving stuff, too . . . though finding a turkey might be a bit of a pain, but there’s still like ham, pumpkin pies, and etc.

But, er, my tradition . . . *blanks* We used to have turkey and all the stuff, but then we’d also do it again for Christmas. It became too much for my mum and dad to do, so I told her to just do it for Christmas, so the turkey coma thing is not happening until next month LOL.

I’m sure your Thanksgiving with your boy’s family went well. :) I’m sorry to hear that the depression is affecting his family more, though. :(
